World Heritage of Portugal l Southern Europe

Monastery of the Jerónimos | Portugal

JERONIMOS MONASTERY

The Jeronimos Monastery is, next to the Tower of Belém, the most important sightseeing tour of Lisbon. In 1983 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. His name in Portuguese is Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.

Designed by architect Diogo de Boitaca, construction of the Jeronimos Monastery began on January 6, 1501 and was completed in the late sixteenth century. The predominant style is the Manueline monastery and was built to celebrate the return of Vasco da Gama India.
Curiously, the location of the monastery was chosen because it was where the Ermida do RESTELO church where Vasco de Gama and his crew spent time praying before starting your trip.

CHURCH
The Church of the Jeronimos Monastery is completely different from all the churches we've seen so far. Its single nave has six perfectly carved columns that seem endless.
The most important points of interest of the church are the tombs of Vasco de Gama and Luís de Camões.

CLAUSTRO
The Cloister of Jeronimos Monastery is even more shocking than the Lisbon Cathedral. Its size and perfection make all the difference.
The tour around the cloister you can visit the church from the top and the tomb of Fernando Pessoa. There is also a room dedicated to the evolution of the monastery comparing PORTUGAL WITH HISTORY AND THE WORLD.

VISIT NEARBY
In the adjoining monastery building is the Museum of Archaeology in Lisbon. A short distance away you can visit the Belém Tower and the Monument to the discoverers, two monuments which together with the Monastery of Jeronimos represent the more buoyant time of Portugal.
