THE WORLD OF MAYA ARTISTS

The art of the Maya world was one of the most important pre-Columbian peoples of Mesoamerica was the culture that spread across several countries in Central America, including Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador.

Most investigators agree that the first Maya came from the Gulf of Mexico and then began a migration flow which led them to expand between 1500 and 800 BC, by zones of Chiapas, the coast of Guatemala, the Guatemalan Petén and Yucatan.

During the Preclassic Maya art was very similar to the neighboring villages, as evidenced by the remains of pottery found. It is not until the second century BC, at the end of that period, when they begin to be clearly differentiated the first artistic expressions. Also, at that time the social organization of the Maya was more complex than that of other Mesoamerican cultures thanks to the birth of an important class, the priests who worship the dead. Begins to develop, on the contrary, a real Mayan architecture and are the first large populations, like Uaxactún, Piedras Negras, Izapa, Mayapan.

The painting of that time on occasion have been small characters are representations of remote people of lower social rank or slaves.
Maya paintings from that time have been from architecture, ceramics and sculpture that can be represented by important figures of that time.
This time represents the oil painting, colorful landscapes and traditional Mayan clothing.
